Thinking about the Adscam- the English Canadian nickname for the sponsorship scandal- I'm struck by an old oped article written at the Avui wriiten a few weeks before teh Spanish elections. That absolute majorities are a danger to a democracy. The party that enjoys one inevitably loses contact with the citizens and becomes insufferable, prone to err and pass really unpopular legislation that the population neither wants nor desired to go so far.
Although the article discussed Spanish politics, I found many of the insights to be transferable mutatis mutandis to any democracy of advanced industralized countries. Canada is a painful example. The Liberal party's 3 consecutive absolute majority have caused it to rot completely. It's not just Adscam but a whole host of really odious decision like the 700 million dollars for the secret slush fund for party faithful national unity finances, law C-250, the 2 billion for the totally useless gun registry and so on and so on.
Absolutely majorities are as dangerous to democracies as corruption and totalitarianism. I'm deeply concerned that even if the federal Liberals faced electoral oblivion like the Conservatives in '93, the new government will be very hardpressed to carry out the reforms to clean up the corruption as well as to prevent future rot. The fault lies with we the voters. We're the ones who deluded ourselves in giving absolute majorities to parties throughout our history. Perhaps a few decades of minority governments will be salutary.
No m'ho crec.
