The ICC and America: checks and balances are still required

I'm particularly irritated when I read at various Internet news outlets that the U.S. has cut off military aid to some 35 countries due to their support of the International Criminal court (ICC). I must say that the Bush Administration is particularly boneheaded towards Columbia. Here's a country that's fighting a truly vicious, brutal war of subversion that would threaten the New World as effectively as a nuclear device stashed in some American city if the FARC/ELN or the paramilitaries won.

So instead of quietly persuading the Columbians to exempt Americans while still permitting the latter to adhere to the ICC as a matter of national foreign policy, the Bush Administration is threatening to cut off all military aid to an allied country. Great move!

I'm particularly offended that the Bush Administration and Americans haven't bothered to persuade the world why the current implementation of the ICC is contrary to the most elemental forms of justice and thus must be opposed by American foreign policy. Instead the American believe that it suffices to express vitrolic hostility.
I'm fed up with the underlying perspective America must be exempt from the ICC's comptency because the former is the lighthouse of the world; or is sinless. America is populated by the same fallen people who can easily succumb to committing evil acts. In banal terms, Americans are just as afflicted by original sin

Furthermore, Americans are constantly haraguing us about checks and balances. Well the ICC happens to be one and as a committed democrat, checks and balances are an integral pillar of a free society. Checks and balances remind us that are limits to political acts and certain boundaries can't be crossed.

So let me be clear, I support the idea of the ICC and think that it'll be a permanent feature of international relations/law; nonetheless, I deplore how too many countries implement the ICC. The implementation is anti American/West, anti-free society and there reeks so much bad faith that it's hard for reasonable people to feel any confidence about the fairness and impartaility of the court.

America's threats to cut off military aid to countries that support the ICC will only serve to corroborate the anti-American activists that America is an out of control, despotic imperial power.

Beckham: ¡prou si us plau!

Some thoughts on Mathir Mohamed's speech

Ok so I'm a bit dated but so what? I'm currently in a neighouring Englishsphere country when I read the speech that Mathir Mohammed made. His remarks about how the West is to blame for Malaysia's woes. My friend was rather skeptical when she hear the remarks. Indeed, I only have to look at Signapore as stark refutation of the Malaysian primer minister's thesis.
Malaysia is bigger than my friend's country, has a larger population, has natural resources which her country doesn't have; yet Malaysia's industrial capacity and economic clout nowhere matches Japan,'s New Zealand's or Austrlia. Gee even Signpore is more impressive.
Mohamed forgets that culture and attitudes play an influential role too. For example, let's not overlook the historically bad relations between the Malays and the Chinese. The latter are more entrepreneurial and are wealtheir than the Malays. Another example is the growing lawlessness over contract disputes. A Swedish Volvo representative was stabbed by spears during a compensation dispute with local car sellers who were let go during a cost cutting phase.
I'm fed up with leaders like Mohamed who always decry some outsider for their own country's problems. Sure colonialsm was horrible but Malaysia's been independent since the 60s; you's think that after 40 years, Malaysians would be resposnible for their own destiny instead of allowing the West to 'boss' them around.

Blogger archive bug and the new interface

Christopher from Insecure Egoist brought to my attention that my blog was affected by the blogger archive bug. Great! I had a similar problem at the beginning of the month when Bill Allison mentioned his inability to link to a previous article.
As soon as Christopher brought it to my attention, I went to my blog to republish the archives... Only to discover that I've been moved to the new Dano interface. So I'm at a total loss as to how to republish the archives. I'll figure it out when I come home.
Sorry for the lack of posts until now

Blogger archive problems again

As I've been away from my computer for overt 2 weeks, it seems that Blogger's annoying archive bug has struck again. Chris kindly brought the problem to my attention. When I tried to republish my blog archives, I discovered that I've been moved to the new Dano system; so I have no clue how to republish the archives. I'll figure it out when I return home.

Sorry for the non-existent posts until now.
